March Wedding Flowers

Seasonal British Flowers, March 2023

We are reaching the end of March and it has been WET!
Looking back through pictures of this time last year we were all out in the garden in glorious sunshine, enjoying the warmth and spring blooms popping up.
But things are a little behind this year… 3 to 4 weeks behind I’d say.

As I look out of my kitchen window I can see the bulbs in my garden popping up, flower heads starting to form on the daffodils and the tulips, but they are still a few weeks away from being in full bloom here.

So what does this mean for your British wedding flowers?
Well, it means you’ll get deliciously fragrant spring stems into April yet (don’t worry, it’s not to say summer flowers won’t be out in the usual time – it’s all weather dependent so keep fingers crossed for a little bit more sun!).
Cornwall is always a little ahead so we have been buying in our tulips, ranunculus and anemones from there, and just starting to come out now are hyacinths, hellebores, and gorgeous cherry blossom branches… what could be more romantic than the floaty pink and white petals of blossom trees?

Below I’ll give you this months comprehensive list of what’s in season – it’s roughly the same each year so if you are planning your wedding in Spring 2024 (or beyond) here is what you can expect!

Alstroemeria – always
Anemones – to die for flowers, paper thin ruffled petals with contrasting centres, the season is finishing for these in Cornwall but still going further north!
Azalea flowers – just starting
Daffodils – these will end just after Easter
Daphne – incredible scent that floats along with you, just coming out now
Hellebores – there is nothing so elegant as a Hellebore, but much harder to come by en mass – I grow these in my garden and cut for the most special arrangements. Usually ready slightly earlier, I will only be cutting my first ones now.
Hyacinths – just starting and smell divine!
Magnolia – just starting and simply stunning
Narcissi – various varieties in yellows and whites, these are coming to an end now
Osmanthus flowers – just starting, delicate little white flowers on woody stems
Peiris flowers – bells shaped and draping clumps of little white flowers
Ranunculus – a firm favourite, and going strong into April
Sweet William – exactly what it says, sweet small filler flowers with delicate scent
Tanacetum – small multi headed daisies
Tulips – speak for themselves!

Foliages include Buxus, Camelia, Choisya, Drimys, Eleagnus, Eucalyptus, Griselinia, Laurel, Leptospurnum, Leucothoe, Photinia Red Robin, Pittosporum, Skimmia.

This list is not exhaustive, we are always looking at new and interesting flowers and greenery. If we spot something delicious we are always sure to incorporate it, and are no strangers to foraging for the best of British blooms!
