Seasonal British Flowers April 2023
We are finally getting hints of spring, hurrah!
We’ve had a few lovely days in short sleeves in the garden, it feels like quite a relief actually.
In fact, today is forecast to be bright and sunny and I am planning on planting a few roses.
The plan is to have a small rose garden for cutting to supplement my work. I’m starting small… I have 4 to be going on with for now and, if I keep them all alive and well, next year I’ll add some more.
As I’ve only picked a few, I have been quite selective, picking those with popular neutral tones for versatility.
• Polar Star – classic shape, stunning crisp white. Hybrid tea rose.

• Lovely Parfuma – Double flowers, frilly petals, very pink. Cottage garden rose.

• Champagne Moment – Double flowers, pale peach centre with pink tinged tips. Floribunda rose.

• Hot Chocolate – classic shape, dusky deep red. Floribunda rose.

These roses have all been picked for their colour and shape, but also because they are disease resistant strong roses, that flower repeatedly for a long time. And, most importantly – they are fragrant! Wonderful for us and the wildlife.
I’ll keep you posted!
Other British grown flowers that are available in April include:
Apple blossom – still going in slightly cooler areas.
Alstroemeria – always.
Cherry blossom – finishing towards the end of April.
Choisya – small white scented flowers with green fan shaped leaves.
Cornflower – for a true wild flower, summer garden feel. Bluey purple, small fluffy round blooms.
Cytisus – broom bush, stems heavily covered in small flowers along its length.
Delphinium – Rods of fluffy blue flowers, great for adding texture.
Enkianthus – small clusters of bell shaped flowers, beautiful drape.
Geums – tall flowers, with small round blooms reminiscent of poppies and anemones. Gives a relaxed feel.
Lily of the valley – small white scented bells, to carry on the feeling of snowdrops.
Ranunculus – end of the season in Cornwall but strong in Somerset for a little longer.
Scilla – purple, reminding us of bluebells.
Sweet peas – delicate and deeply scented.
Snapdragon – poker shape in a range of lovely soft colours.
Stocks – incredible scent, fluffy flowers.
Tulips – almost over now.
Veronica – more poker shaped stems covered in tiny dainty flowers.
As the end of April closes we say goodbye to daffodils and narcissi for another year! It was a good year though!
